The D Word is a resource designed to be delivered by experienced Celebrants to groups of any age and stage who would benefit from being supported to become familiar with what to expect when someone close dies.
It was launched in May 2025 and involves up to 8 sessions, adapted to meet the needs of the group, which can include:
The D Word The was successfully trialled in 2024/2025 with senior pupils from Braes High School in Falkirk, and with a group from CACE (Cumbernauld Action for Care of the Elderly).
We now have four Celebrants who can deliver The D Word sessions to schools and community groups.
Gillian Robertson (Founder of The D Word CIC), Aileen Palmer, Laura Throssell, Angela Maughan.
We are covered by The D Word CIC Insurance Policy, and we are Disclosure Checked.
An important feature of The D Word is facilitating, supporting and encouraging participants to visit funeral parlours, crematoria, cemeteries before this is necessary. Within the security of a group, there are opportunities to become familiar with these places, to ask questions and share concerns. This is often very difficult to do at a time of grief.
We each bring our own unique experiences of funeral services, our contacts with Funeral Directors and Crematorium Staff, and our shared commitment to give participants the chance to talk about death in a safe space.
The D Word resources include informative PowerPoint Presentations, recordings of a staged funeral and burial and advice about helpful websites
All participants receive a completion certificate and a booklet, ‘What Happens When Someone Close Dies’. This includes a range of helpful advice and guidance.

The D Word aims to increase knowledge and awareness, reduce anxiety and apprehension, and contribute to an increasingly compassionate society where talking about death is a more common and comfortable experience
A society where conversations about death are open, informed, and compassionate, where individuals feel supported in planning for the inevitable and are empowered to honour both life and loss in meaningful ways.
Compassion We create a safe, supportive space for open conversations about death, ensuring a blend of respect, lightness, and celebration of life.
Knowledge We provide clear, practical information to help individuals and communities make informed choices.
Empowerment We equip people with the confidence to discuss end-of-life planning and make decisions that align with their wishes.
Inclusivity We recognise and respect diverse cultural and personal approaches to death and funerals.
Community We encourage dialogue within families, schools, and community groups to foster understanding and reduce stigma.
